The good news about root canal treatment in Champaign, IL, is the procedure is like a hero that swoops in to rescue an otherwise doomed tooth. Regardless of its reputation, this dental treatment is a pain-reliever and a tooth saver. But like any serious action, you’ll want to follow specific points of after-care to ensure lasting success.

At Anderson Dental, our team of professionals will ensure that your root canal therapy is effective. Then, we will ensure you know what to do when you leave our office, especially where food and drink are concerned. Here are some guidelines we recommend you follow in the hours and days after root canal treatment.

Keep to Soft Foods Immediately after Treatment

For many dental treatments, we will numb your teeth, gums, cheeks, and maybe even your tongue. Therefore, you should avoid eating anything in the hours post-procedure when this is still in effect.

Then, for about 48-72 hours beyond treatment, you should eat only soft foods that don’t require chewing. Here are some examples:

  • Soup (with no solid components)
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Hummus
  • Scrambled egg
  • Pasta
  • Applesauce
  • Yogurt

These foods won’t increase your sensitivity or soreness, nor will they endanger your temporary dental crown restoration.

Sticky Is Icky – Protect Your Temporary Dental Crown

Porcelain crowns are the standard finishing restorations for root canal therapy, but we have them precision-crafted in a dental lab which may take a couple of weeks. In the interim, we will fit you with a temporary tooth crown.

As with most temporary items, this restoration can be damaged or dislodged. The prime suspect is always sticky foods, like caramel, gummy or other candies. These should be avoided with extreme prejudice, along with excessively hard foods like nuts, uncooked vegetables like carrots, and hard candy.
