At Anderson Dental, we aim to provide the best care and advice for a speedy and comfortable healing process. If you've recently undergone a tooth extraction in Champaign, here are some essential dos and don'ts.

The Dos After a Tooth Extraction

  1. Follow your dentist's instructions. Your dentist will give you specific aftercare instructions. Follow them diligently to avoid complications and promote healing.
  2. Rest and relax. Take it easy for the first 24 hours after your extraction. Avoid strenuous activities that could increase blood pressure and lead to bleeding at the extraction site.
  3. Apply ice packs. To reduce swelling, apply ice packs to your face for 15-minute intervals. This can be particularly effective in the first 24 hours after the extraction.
  4. Keep your head elevated. When lying down, keep your head elevated with pillows to reduce bleeding and swelling.
  5. Take prescribed medications. Take medications as directed to manage pain and prevent infection.
  6. Maintain oral hygiene. Carefully brush your teeth, but avoid the extraction site. After the first 24 hours, rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater solution to clean the area.

The Don'ts After a Tooth Extraction

  1. Don't smoke or use tobacco. Smoking can significantly delay healing and increase the risk of complications such as dry socket. Avoid smoking for at least 72 hours after the procedure.
  2. Avoid straws and spitting. Using straws or forcefully spitting can dislodge the blood clot that forms in the extraction site, leading to dry socket.
  3. Don't eat crunchy foods. Eat soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies for the first few days. Avoid foods that irritate the extraction site or get lodged in the wound.
  4. Avoid touching the extraction site. Keep your tongue and fingers away from it to prevent irritation and infection.
  5. Don't ignore persistent pain or swelling. Some discomfort is normal, but if you experience severe pain, excessive swelling, or signs of infection, immediately contact your dentist in Champaign, IL.
