What can you eat after a root canal?

Root canal treatment in Champaign, IL, is a simple procedure that rids your tooth’s root of infection. It also relieves swelling and prevents the need for extraction. The treated tooth is later capped with a quality dental crown to preserve or restore function.

However, if you’ve never had a root canal, you might wonder about recovery and what foods you should avoid the day after treatment.

Because we administer anesthesia, the area around your tooth will be numb. Because of this, we recommend no hot foods or drinks until the anesthesia wears off. We also suggest soft foods for the first day:

  • Smoothies
  • Yogurt
  • Apple sauce
  • Mashed potatoes

You should also avoid spicy foods on the day following treatment. And you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed. Root canal recovery is typically quick—a day or two of mild discomfort.

There are no food restrictions when you come in for your tooth crown, usually a week or two after treatment. However, it is always best not to chew sticky foods on a crowned tooth.
